Waldorf Inspired Dolls
A Waldorf doll (also called Steiner doll) is a form of doll compatible with Waldorf (or Steiner) education philosophies, these are dolls that encourage a child’s own imagination in play. My Waldorf dolls are of natural materials, such as fine wool or cotton skin toned fabric, pure wool stuffing, and I use techniques of needle felting and rolling wool batting in the style of traditional European doll-making, to make my innocent, beautiful looking dolls.
The dolls appearance is intentionally simple in order to allow the child playing with it to develop their imagination and creative play. True Waldorf dolls have either no features, or a simple neutral expression. Art dolls inspired by the Waldorf type can have what ever features their makers wish them to have, but are also made using wool and can have faces made with a lot of needle felting to give them such wonderful expressions.
I make different styles of dolls, each suited to a different age group; from a simple sack or pillow doll for a baby, a knotted or handkerchief style for a teething child, a simple doll with bulky limbs and either short hair or a hat for a toddler. For an older more independent child who can change clothing and dress hair, ‘formed’ limbed dolls with the ability to sit are introduced with changeable clothing. These older dolls are also fabulous for adult doll collectors to add to their collections.
